The Monstrous Plant

THOIA's Monster Vegetation theme continues, and today's story by Ken Bald is from the January 1951 issue of Adventures into the Unknown #15... it begins in the jungle, but ends in a lonely greenhouse where a strange, terrifying creature of evil is born!

NEXT: Zombie!

Well, this was definitely inspired by Collier's "Green Thoughts," though not quite as poetic. Still, Bald's work is beautiful. It's also nice to see a character in a pre-code horror comic story who is so practical that she actually worries about paying the electric bill.

i really love the way this one is drawn. very crisp and clean line work and panel set up.

i also really love how everyone thinks out loud. "he's dropped Arthur, now i can get away." and my favorite "... the fire is spreading... consuming me." instead of just going "aaaaaaauuurrggh!" awesome stuff!

Why do these two dopes seem so mystified by what this plant is right up until it starts talking to them? The dude tells them what he's planning right from the get go.

She barely gets loose from this plant monster that is now crushing her hubby... she she gets the good idea of using the axe... and then she hits the monster's arm with the back of the axe head?

Great Guns! It is I, sfdoomed, who wonders why the artist chose to draw some Amazonian-looking natives when the setting is the dark continent? Fools!

This story was actually better than I thought it would be, and I think the longer amount of time given to the plant's growth helped. But I agree with jpmorgan about her hitting the plant on the arm with the blunt side of the axe. Jeez, good help is hard to find when you're in the grasp of the creepers!

COOL STORY, IT REMINDED ME OF REVENGE OF DR X A LITTLE BUT WITH A CREEPIER MONSTER. I'M SURPRISED NO ONE HAS MENTIONED THE NATIVE MASK IN THE FIRST PANEL ON PAGE 3, WTF????

Yeah, Revenge of Dr X is a hoot... Ed Wood by way of TOEI (with topless Japanese girls too!) Today's post was indeed similar.

Got more jungle jitters lined up for you next, with a dash of zombies as well, don't miss it.

Thanks again everyone!
